Kilimanjaro, The Northern Rongai Approach
A northern approach, a changing mountain landscape and time to settle into the rhythm of the climb.

Private journey
Well connected.
Wonderfully yours.
Approach Kilimanjaro from its northern slopes, then descend through Marangu, with a seven-day trail programme framed by Moshi hotel nights.
The Rongai journey offers a different perspective on the mountain, moving from the lower northern slopes towards Mawenzi and the higher saddle before the summit attempt. This nine-day proposal includes the arrival and departure sequence; the daily plan identifies seven days on the trail.
The route, equipment, support arrangements and transfers are confirmed in a written proposal. The mountain team adapts the programme to conditions, and reaching the summit is never guaranteed.
Eight days on the mountain
A western approach across the Shira Plateau.
A varied traverse
Move from forest through moorland into alpine terrain.
Moshi on either side

DAY 1Mount KilimanjaroWelcome to Tanzania
+
Welcome to Tanzania

Arrive in Tanzania and continue to your Moshi base. Keep the first evening simple, with the meeting point and transfer coordinated around your actual flight. Your pre-climb briefing reviews the route, equipment and the programme ahead. Allow time for questions and any final arrangements rather than adding a fixed sightseeing schedule before the journey has begun.
DAY 2Mount KilimanjaroNalemoru Gate to Simba Camp
+
Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp

Travel to the northern trailhead and complete the registration arrangements with your mountain team. The first stage of the Rongai route moves through the lower mountain landscape towards Simba Camp, with the guide setting a measured walking rhythm. This is a day to settle into the routine of the climb, organise the day bag and appreciate the changing vegetation as the trail climbs. The overnight is in tents, with the support and meal arrangements identified in your proposal.
DAY 3Mount KilimanjaroFrom Simba Camp to Second Cave
+
From Simba Camp to Second Cave

Continue across the northern moorland towards Second Cave. The scenery becomes more open, with the mountain taking on a different character from the forest approach. Your team decides the daily stops and walking pace around the group and current conditions. Reaching camp leaves time to organise your kit, rest and discuss the next stage. The route is planned as a complete sequence; this night has a role in the gradual progress up the mountain.
DAY 4Mount KilimanjaroAcross the moorland to Kikelewa
+
Across the moorland to Kikelewa

Leave the main northern line for the route towards Kikelewa, with the scenery drawing the journey closer to Mawenzi. The guide-led pace and the day’s breaks are part of the programme, rather than a reason to race to the next overnight. At camp, settle into the routine of preparing for the following stage and make time to discuss how the day has felt with the mountain team. Conditions determine the precise rhythm on the trail.
DAY 5Mount KilimanjaroThe approach to Mawenzi Tarn
+
The approach to Mawenzi Tarn

The route gains a more dramatic mountain setting as it reaches the Mawenzi Tarn area. Allow the team to set the pace through the changing terrain, with stops appropriate to the group. The overnight brings the climb into a different landscape from the lower slopes. Any additional short walk and the afternoon programme are directed by the mountain team; use the time to rest, prepare equipment and review the next stage.
DAY 6Mount KilimanjaroCross the saddle towards Kibo
+
Cross the saddle towards Kibo

Continue towards the Kibo base area across the higher mountain landscape. Today connects the northern approach with the route used for the summit attempt, and the later part of the day is deliberately focused on preparation and rest. Your mountain team reviews the departure sequence, clothing and practical arrangements for the night ahead. The exact timing follows the conditions and the guide-led programme rather than a guaranteed timetable.
DAY 7Mount KilimanjaroSummit attempt and descent to Horombo
+
Summit attempt and descent to Horombo

Set out for the summit attempt at the time chosen by the mountain team. The climb is demanding, and decisions are guided by conditions and the wellbeing of the group. Reaching Uhuru Peak is an objective rather than a promise. The descent is a substantial part of the same day, continuing towards the Horombo overnight. Keep the focus on the guide-led programme and the recovery time needed after the effort of the high mountain.
DAY 8Mount KilimanjaroDescend through Marangu and return to Moshi
+
Descend through Marangu and return to Moshi

Follow the descent route towards Marangu, moving back through the mountain’s lower vegetation zones. This remains a walking day, with the pace and stops set by the team and the trail conditions. Complete the exit arrangements before the transfer to your Moshi hotel. A restful evening gives the climb a more comfortable ending and leaves room for an unhurried review of the journey before the next travel day.
DAY 9Mount KilimanjaroA gentle farewell
+
A gentle farewell

Your final transfer is planned around the flight or onward journey you have confirmed. Keep the schedule practical after the mountain, rather than assuming an early departure suits every traveller. A safari or island extension can be discussed when the wider itinerary leaves suitable time to rest and make the connections. The final proposal identifies the departure point and the services included.

A little more about the guide price +
Indicative guide price in USD per person, based on two adults sharing. Your final quotation depends on travel dates, party size, accommodation availability, transport and confirmed inclusions. Single-room supplements, optional activities and international flights are additional unless expressly included. The itinerary and named stays are proposals, subject to availability. Mountain package costs depend on route duration, crew arrangements and confirmed park fees. Summit success is not guaranteed; comprehensive trekking insurance and equipment requirements will be discussed before booking.
How the route and daily timing work+
Your programme balances time exploring with the practical connections between overnight stops. Drive and walking times vary with the route, weather and conditions, so the final briefing confirms each day rather than relying on fixed timings shown months in advance.
Accommodation, room setup and meals+
Linked stays are shown in the day-by-day plan. Your proposal names the room categories, meal basis and any single-room or family arrangements. A substitute property is discussed if the original choice is unavailable.
Transport, luggage and flight connections+
Road transfers and any domestic flights are identified in the quotation. Check the actual baggage rules of each carrier before packing, particularly on small-aircraft connections. International flights are not assumed to be included.
